WASHINGTON, DC – In September 2011, the National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) sold the 2000th in its “Be Safe, Be Proud” safety video series, marking a milestone in efforts to reduce workplace accidents and injuries for solid waste services industry employees. David Biderman, NSWMA Safety Director, notes: “We regularly receive inquiries for the safety videos, and I think they have contributed to the overall decline in the industry’s injury rate over the past 7 years.
NSWMA developed four safety videos, under grants awarded by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) starting in 2004. These videos are available in VHS or DVD formats. The 18-20 minute videos (available in English and Spanish) feature actual solid waste employees in real workplace hazard situations faced by drivers and helpers on collection routes or by workers at landfills and transfer stations. They help companies and governments reduce accidents, injuries and fatalities. The videos include:
- Be Safe, Be Proud focusing on workplace hazards faced by drivers and helpers on residential collection routes.
- Be Safe, Be Proud - At The Landfill focusing on landfill safety hazards faced by spotters, heavy equipment operators and other landfill employees.
- Be Safe, Be Proud - At the Transfer Station focusing on safety hazards at transfer stations faced by workers, haulers and long-haul truckers.
- Be Safe, Be Proud - Safety Awareness for Supervisors and Risk Managers showing supervisors how to train and coach collection and maintenance workers to work safely.
In addition to the training video series, NSWMA offers a comprehensive safety manual, organizes regional safety seminars and educational sessions at WasteExpo, and develops different publications and electronic advisories to its members about safety developments.
