WASHINGTON, D.C. – The EIA Women's Council (WC) has begun the application process for its 2012-2013 academic scholarships. This scholarship program assists qualified individuals in their pursuit of education that will lead to careers in the environmental industry. All employees whose companies are members of the National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) or Waste Technology and Equipment Association (WASTEC) and their dependents are eligible to apply. The WC works for the professional advancement of women through meaningful and useful education, assistance, support, and mentoring.

Since the program's inception in 2007, the Women’s Council has awarded nearly $50,000 in scholarships to 18 students. In 2012, the Women’s Council will award three $5,000 scholarships.

Kirsti Nelson, the 2012 WC President and the Director of Marketing at Otto Environmental Systems North America, expressed hope that NSWMA and WASTEC member companies will take advantage of the program: "We are really proud of this program. A $5,000 scholarship can be very helpful to any student. By making such resources available, the Women's Council is helping develop future employees for the environmental services industry. If history repeats itself, we will have exceptional applicants from which to choose for the 2012 program. It is an honor to award these scholarships to such great people."

Peggy Macenas, the WC Manager, described the process for applying, "We worked to make the application process as easy as possible for applicants. All NSWMA and WASTEC member company employees who are in school or who have children in school should look at this opportunity."

The submission deadline is February 15, 2012, and decisions will be announced on or about March 1, 2012. Awardees will be featured in publications for WasteExpo 2012 to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, from April 30-May 3, 2012.
